A long working life can leave its mark on the body. For older adults who’ve spent years in physically demanding roles, staying mobile and independent can become just as important as managing aches and pains.
This makes musculoskeletal health especially relevant for many within the Seacare Co-operative Limited (Seacare) community, given their backgrounds in seafaring and years of hard physical work. On Saturday, 22 August 2026, Seacare and Mount Alvernia Hospital brought members together at Maritime Hall in the Seacare Building for ‘Golden Years, Strong Joints’, a health and wellness talk on looking after joint and muscle health later in life.
Dr Francis Wong led the session, speaking about common concerns including persistent joint pain, reduced mobility, muscle loss, and falls. He also covered exercise, nutrition, symptom monitoring, and when ongoing discomfort calls for an assessment.
This last point is often the hardest to judge alone, particularly when symptoms build gradually over many years. At Oxford Cartilage & Sports Centre, we want this kind of guidance to reach people through community talks as well as in the consultation room, so they can recognise changes earlier and ask better questions about their health. With this knowledge, and the right care when it’s needed, those in their golden years can remain active and independent.
